I had a player like that once that tried to get us all to immerse us with the Japanese aspect once. He even handed out "cheat sheets" to everyone so that they'd be more prone to use the launguage, which they didn't. He got quite upset at me when I kept empahasizing that despite the similarities, Rokugan wasn't Japan. The funny thing was he was a horrible roleplayer and really only participated in combat and stayed sort-of spaced out state until it began, which is why it didn't make sense that he tried to push so much of the Japan aspect on us.
As for it being intimidating, I don't think that's true if you try to play it with people that at least enjoy the card game. It's a natural progression to go from playing the card game to go to the RPG. The RPG allows for more interesting opportunities then the card game and everyone, including your worst card player in the group, can have fun with the RPG.
